2.4 Cháu-chhiàng--ê khì pn̄g-tiàm piáu-ián [Tâi-gí gí-im]
Boeh-àm ê sî, lo̍h chi̍t chūn tōa-hō͘. Soaⁿ ní kah pe̍h bâng-bâng chi̍t phiàn, hun bē chhut hn̄g-kīn, lí-koán thâu-chêng ê khe-á chúi piàn lô koh n̂g, chúi-lâu siaⁿ mā piàn tōa siaⁿ. Góa ná teh siūⁿ, chiah tōa ê hō͘, bú-niû in eng-kai bē chhut-lâi piáu-ián chio lâng-kheh ah, m̄-koh góa iū-koh chē bē-tiâu, tō koh nn̄g-saⁿ kái cháu khì chìm un-chôaⁿ. Pâng-keng chiâⁿ àm-sàm. Hām keh-piah pâng sio-keh ê keh-pang téng khui chi̍t-ê sì-kak khang, tiàu chi̍t pha tiān-hóe tī hia, hō͘ nn̄g ê pâng-keng kong-ke chiò. "Tong, tong, tong." Tī tōa-hō͘ siaⁿ tiong, hn̄g-hn̄g thoân lâi ná-chhiūⁿ ū kó͘-siaⁿ. Góa kóaⁿ-kín-kín thoah-khui thang-á, thàm-sin chhut-khì. Kó͘-siaⁿ ká-ná lú lâi lú kīn ah. Hong-hō͘ phah tī góa ê thâu. Góa ba̍k-chiu kheh-kheh, khi thâu iōng hīⁿ-khang thiaⁿ, siūⁿ boeh chai-iáⁿ kó͘-siaⁿ tī tó, sī án-chóaⁿ thoân kòe-lâi ê. Bô-gōa-kú, koh ū thiaⁿ tio̍h samisen (三味線, ū saⁿ tiâu hiân ê ga̍k-khì) ê siaⁿ, mā ū cha-bó͘ ê kiò siaⁿ, kap chhá-cha̍p ê kún-chhiò siaⁿ. Góa chai ah, sī cháu-chhiàng--ê hông kiò khì sió kheh-chàn tùi-bīn pn̄g-tiàm ê iàn-hōe tiûⁿ piáu-ián. Ē-tàng hun-pia̍t chhut nn̄g-saⁿ ê cha-bó͘ siaⁿ kap saⁿ-sì ê cha-po͘ siaⁿ. Góa kî-thāi hia kiat-sok liáu, in ē tùi chia lâi. M̄-koh he chiú-tiûⁿ lāu-jia̍t kún-kún, khòaⁿ-khoán ē it-ti̍t sòa-lo̍h-khì. Cha-bó͘ ê chiam-kiò-siaⁿ sî-sî ná sih-nah chǹg-kòe àm-iā. Góa sîn-keng kín-tiuⁿ, it-ti̍t hō͘ thang-á khui-khui, chē leh tāng to bô tāng. Nā thiaⁿ tio̍h kó͘-siaⁿ góa ê sim tō sóng-khoài.
"Ah, bú-niû iáu tī iàn-hōe ni̍h. I chē tio̍h teh kòng-kó͘." Kó͘-siaⁿ nā thêng, góa tō lia̍h-kông, tūi-lo̍h tī hō͘-siaⁿ lāi-té.
Kòe chi̍t-ē, m̄-chai in sī teh sio-jiok sńg-chhiò, a̍h-sī teh se̍h-kho͘-á thiàu-bú, keng-kòe chi̍t-chūn loān-cha̍p ê kha-pō͘ siaⁿ. Koh-lâi, iū-koh tiām-tiām bô siaⁿ. Góa ba̍k-chiu tián tōa, khòaⁿ hiòng o͘-àm, siūⁿ boeh khòaⁿ chhut che an-chēng sī siáⁿ ì-sù. Góa chiâⁿ khó͘-náu, hoân-ló bú-niû e-àm sī-m̄-sī ē hông khi-hū?
Góa koaiⁿ thang-á, chǹg-ji̍p mî-phōe, m̄-koh sim-koaⁿ chiok kan-khó͘. Góa koh khì chìm un-chôaⁿ, tōa-tōa-la̍t póe-chúi. Hō͘ thêng ah, goe̍h-niû chhut--lâi. Hō͘-chúi sé-kòe ê chhiu-iā chheng-khì koh bêng-liāng. Góa siūⁿ, tō kóng góa chhiah-kha kiâⁿ-chhut e̍k-tiûⁿ, khì hia mā bô hoat-tō͘ chhòng siáⁿ. Chit-sî í-keng nn̄g-tiám gōa ah.

欲暗 ê , 落一陣大雨. 山染甲白茫茫一片, 分袂出遠近, 旅館頭前 ê 溪仔水變濁 koh , 水流聲 變大聲. ná teh , 遮大 ê , 舞娘 in 應該袂出來表演招人客 ah, 毋過我又閣坐袂牢, tō koh 兩三改走去浸溫泉. 房間誠暗毿. 和隔壁房相隔 ê 隔枋頂開一个四角空, 吊一葩電火 , 予兩个房間公家照. "Tong, tong, tong." Tī 大雨聲中, 遠遠傳來 像有鼓聲. 我趕緊緊 thoah 開窗仔, 探身出去. 鼓聲 ká-ná 愈來愈近 ah. 風雨拍 ê . 我目睭瞌瞌, khi 頭用耳空聽, 想欲知影鼓聲 tī tó, 是按怎傳過來 ê. 無偌久, koh 有聽著 samisen (三味線, 有三條弦 ê 樂器) ê , mā 有查某 ê 叫聲, kap 吵雜 ê 滾笑聲. 我知 ah, 是走唱 ê hông 叫去小客棧對面飯店 ê 宴會場表演. 會當分別出兩三 ê 查某聲 kap 三四 ê 查埔聲. 我期待遐結束了, in 會對遮來. 毋過彼酒場鬧熱滾滾, 看款會一直紲落去. 查某 ê 尖叫聲時時 ná sih-nah 鑽過暗夜. 我神經緊張, 一直 hō͘ 窗仔開開, leh to 無動. 若聽著鼓聲我 ê 爽快.
"Ah, 舞娘猶 宴會 ni̍h. 伊坐著 teh 摃鼓." 鼓聲若停, 掠狂, 墜落 雨聲內底.
過一下, 毋知 in teh 相逐耍笑, 抑是 teh 踅箍仔跳舞, 經過一陣亂雜 ê 跤步聲. Koh , koh 恬恬無聲. 我目睭展大, 看向烏暗, 想欲看出這安靜是啥意思. 我誠苦惱, 煩惱舞娘下暗是毋是會 hông 欺負?
我關窗仔, 鑽入棉被, 毋過心肝足艱苦. koh 去浸溫泉, 大大力 póe . 雨停 ah, 月娘出來. 雨水洗過 ê 秋夜清氣 koh 明亮. 我想, tō 講我赤跤行出浴場, 去遐 無法度創啥. 這時已經兩點外 ah.

Rain started pouring around sunset. The mountains turned colorless and lost their depth. The small stream in front of the inn ran yellow as I watched it. The sound of rushing water grew louder. Thinking that the dancers would never come looking for customers in this torrent, I could not sit still, so I went to the bath two or three more times. My room was dismal. An electric light hung in a square hole cut in the wall between my room and the next, where it could illuminate both rooms."Ton, ton, ton, ton." In the distance beyond the clamor of the rain, the vague reverberations of a drum arose. I shoved open one of the shutters and hung out the window. The drum seemed to be getting closer. The rain and wind lashed my head. Closing my eyes and straining to hear, I tried to determine the path of the drum as it approached. A moment later I heard the sound of a samisen. I heard a woman's long scream. I heard boisterous laughter. I surmised that the entertainers had been called to the banquet room at the inn across from their own. I could distinguish two or three women's voices and three or four men's. I expected them to travel in my direction once the party broke up, but it seemed the party would pass the point of merry drinking and dissolve into riotous nonsense. Occasionally a woman's high, piercing voice rent the nightlike a thunderbolt. My nerves were on edge. I left the shutter open and just sat by the window. I felt some consolation every time I heard the drum.
"Oh, the dancing girl is still at the party. She's sitting, playing the drum." I could not bear the silences when the drum stopped. I sank down into the depths of the sound of the rain.
At length I could hear the noise of confused footsteps—were they playing tag or dancing in circles? Then all fell silent. I opened my eyes wide, trying to peer through the darkness. What was this stillness? I was tormented, wondering if the dancing girl's night might be sullied.
I closed the shutters and crawled into bed, but my chest felt heavy. I went down again for a bath. I thrashed the water. The rain stopped and the moon came out. The autumn night was bright, washed clean by the rain. I slipped out of the bathhouse barefoot, but I could not do anything. It was past two o'clock.
