2.3 Che the̍h-khì bé khī-á chia̍h [Tâi-gí gí-im]

Hit sî, sì-cha̍p hòe cha-bó͘ ná kim-kim lia̍h góa khòaⁿ, ná kóng: "Siù-châi chhēng ê khóng-sek phùn pe̍h-hoe ê saⁿ chin hó-khòaⁿ.

"I ê pe̍h-hoe kap Tamiji (民次) ê hoe-chháu kāng-khoán neh, Sī kāng-khoán ê hoe-chháu, kám m̄-sī ah?"

Kúi nā piàn mn̄g piⁿ-á ê cha-bó͘ gín-á liáu, i tùi góa kóng: "Góan chhù iáu-ū chi̍t-ê teh tha̍k-chheh ê gín-á, taⁿ khì siūⁿ tio̍h i. I chhēng ê phùn-hoe hoe-chháu kap lí ê kāng-khoán. Chit-chām-á khóng-sek phùn pe̍h-hoe ê pò͘ kùi kah m̄-chai boeh án-chóaⁿ hó."

"Siáⁿ-mih ha̍k-hāu?"

"Phó͘-thong sió-ha̍k gō͘-nî--ê."

"Oh, phó͘-thong sió-ha̍k gō͘-nî-kip..."

"Sī tī Kofu (甲府) ê ha̍k-hāu. Goán tòa tī Oshima ū chi̍t-chām ah, m̄-koh kò͘-hiong sī tī Kai (甲斐）ê Kofu."

Hioh-khùn chi̍t tiám-cheng liáu-āu, hit-ê cha-po͘ chhōa góa kàu lēng-gōa chi̍t keng un-chôaⁿ lí-koán. Hit-chūn í-chêng, góa it-ti̍t lóng siūⁿ-kóng ē hām chiah-ê gē-jîn tòa kāng keng ê sió kheh-chàn. In-ūi i chhēng ìn ū Nagaoka (長岡) Un-chôaⁿ ê té-saⁿ, góa goân-pún siūⁿ-kóng i sī Nagaoka ê lâng. Cha-po͘ lī-khui ê sî, ùi chêng-tiâⁿ gia̍h-thâu khòaⁿ góa, kap góa phah-chio-ho͘.

"Che the̍h khì bé khī-á chia̍h lah. Pháiⁿ-sè ùi jī-lâu tàn-lo̍h, chin sit-lé." góa ná kóng, ná tìm chi̍t pau chîⁿ lo̍h-khì. 彼時, 四十歲查某 ná 金金掠我看, ná 講: "秀才穿 ê 紺色噴白花 ê 衫真好看.

"伊 ê 白花 kap Tamiji (民次) ê 花草仝款 neh, 是仝款 ê 花草, 敢毋是 ah?"

幾若遍問邊仔 ê 查某囡仔了, 伊對我講: "阮厝猶有一个 teh 讀冊 ê 囡仔, 今去想著伊. 伊穿 ê 噴花花草 kap 你 ê 仝款. 這站仔紺色噴白花 ê 布貴甲毋知欲按怎好."

"啥物學校?"

"普通小學五年 ê."

"Oh, 普通小學五年級..."

"是 tī Kofu (甲府) ê 學校. 阮 tòa tī Oshima 有一站 ah, 毋過故鄉是 tī Kai (甲斐）ê Kofu."

歇睏一點鐘了後, 彼个查埔𤆬我到另外一間溫泉旅館. 彼陣以前, 我一直攏想講會和 chiah-ê 藝人 tòa 仝間 ê 小客棧. 阮離開街路, 行過一百外米 ê 石頭仔路, koh 落石頭坎, 過溪邊公共浴場邊仔 ê 橋, 來到橋對面溫泉旅館 ê 前埕 ni̍h.

我入去旅館 ê 室內浴場, 彼个查埔 mā 綴來. 伊講, 伊二十四歲, in 某有兩改, 毋是流產就是早產, 失去囡仔. 因為伊穿印有 Nagaoka (長岡) 溫泉 ê 短衫, 我原本想講伊是 Nagaoka ê 人. Koh 伊 ê 外表 kap 講話看起來相當有智識, tō 想講伊是因為好奇抑是愛著一个藝人姑娘才替 in 提行李綴來 ê.

Ùi 浴場出來, 我隨食中晝. 早起八點離開 Yugashima, 今得欲下晡三點.

查埔離開 ê 時, ùi 前埕攑頭看我, kap 我拍招呼.

"這提去買柿仔食 lah. 歹勢 ùi 二樓擲落, 真失禮." 我 ná 講, ná tìm 一包錢落去. 伊謝絕, 想欲行開, 毋過紙包已經 lak tī 埕 ni̍h, 伊只好斡轉來 kā 抾起來, "這款代誌毋通 lah." 伊 ná 講, koh kā tìm 起來. 紙包 lak tī 茅仔厝頂. 我 koh kā tìm 落, 伊 tō 扎著轉去.

"The young student's indigo kimono certainly is nice," the woman remarked, her eyes fixed on me.

"The pattern is the same as Tamiji's. Isn't it. Isn't it the same?"

After pressing the girls several times, she spoke to me. "We have another child at home still in school. I was thinking of him. He has the same kind of kimono as yours. These days indigo kimonos are so expensive, I just don't know what to do."

"What kind of school?"

"Elementary school, fifth grade.""Oh, you have a fifth grader?..."

"His school is not on Oshima. It's in Kofu. We've been on Oshima for a long time, but Kofu is our original home."

After we rested for an hour, die man led me to another hot spring inn. Until then I had assumed I would be staying at the same lodging house with the entertainers. We walked about one hundred yards along a gravel road and down some stone steps, then crossed a bridge near a public bath beside a stream. The garden of the inn was on the other side of the bridge.

I stepped into the bath and the man got in after me. He told me he was twenty-four. His wife had lost two children, one by miscarriage and one that was born prematurely. I assumed he was from Nagaoka, since his jacket bore a Nagaoka Hot Springs emblem. His intellectual manner of speaking and his facial expressions made me wonder if he had been following the entertainers and carrying their luggage simply out of curiosity, or perhaps because he had fallen in love with one of them.

I ate lunch as soon as I got out of the bath. I had left Yugashima at eight o'clock in the morning, but it was not yet three o'clock now.

As the man made his way to the inn gate, he looked up at my window to say good-bye.

"Buy yourself some persimmons or something. I'm sorry. This is such a rude way to give this to you, from the second floor." I tossed down a packet of money. The man refused it and turned to go, but he couldn't leave the money lying in the garden so he returned and picked it up. "You shouldn't do things like this," he said, tossing the packet back up at me. It landed on the thatched roof. When I threw it down a second time, he took it with him.
